The idea of using AI to communicate with people we've lost isn't new for sci-fi — see Black Mirror's "Be Right Back" episode — but it's becoming a real possibility of late.

In Netflix's upcoming film Wonderland, sees a company creating a simulated universe where people can recreate the departed and interact with them on their smartphones in video calls, or full immersions it seems.

Directed by Kim Tae Yong and starring Tang Wei, Suzy, Park Bo Gum, Jung Yu-mi, and Choi Woo Shik, the film revolves around the titular Wonderland video call platform. We see the characters using the service to reconnect in simulations with their daughters, boyfriends, and others who have died. The trailer, which is an emotional ride, suggests the film explores grief, closure, and love in a tech-assisted future, and the ethical implications.

Wonderland is streaming on Netflix July 26, with Korea streaming dates TBC.
